Having trained and worked as a Traditional Oak Carpenter for over 10 years in Berkshire, I established
B R Carpentry following a family move to Devon over 13 years ago.
I have been fortunate to work on a variety of projects across the South Hams since starting independently, from simple Oak shelving to bespoke kitchens, garden rooms, porches, flooring and structural decking. Restoration or renovation to the simple fitting of a new door – all projects considered:
Kitchens.....
I work closely with my local branch of Howdens in Kingsbridge as one of their recommended kitchen fitters.
Projects have included complete re-fits, simple facelifts with new cupboard doors and drawer fronts, fitting of free standing units, to handmade, bespoke kitchens to fit challenging spaces in older cottages. One of the advantages of a bespoke hand built kitchen is the flexibility to evolve the design as the work progresses, allowing optimum practical use of the space. A recent example was a beautiful old cottage renovation where it was important to utilise every inch of space possible - we had to consider building the kitchen around an old window seat space so instead decided to incorporate the seat area into the design by using the space to create an additional large cupboard, allowing the worktop to run continually and creating both additional storage as well as usable worktop area.
Garden rooms/outbuildings....
Projects have included enclosing old stone barns - creating working, usable spaces for outside kitchens, offices or utility rooms; designing and re-creating an old Victorian Greenhouse; a number of Oak porches using traditional methods of Oak joinery and the enclosing of an old agricultural barn, creating a versatile first floor space. All of the projects have required the work of additional trades - electricians, plumbers, plasterers, stonemasons and decorators - and I have developed strong working links with a great team of local independent, professional tradesman who I feel confident recommending to clients and pulling in on projects when required.
Decking....
Living by the sea has introduced a number of varied, interesting and sometimes challenging decking commissions. I encourage clients to consider using a replacement decking that combines both safety and design - as traditional wooden decking can often become a slippery hazard after a number of years.
I completed a major project in Salcombe that required the sub structure to be restored before the new decking could be fitted and as the property sat directly above the water, the challenge was to work around the tides for access..... but the view was amazing! For this particular project we used a safety decking by Gripsure which provides a brilliant non-slip surface which is still easy and comfortable to walk upon with bare feet. The design and build was recognised by Gripsure and entered into one of their competitions for innovative design - which I was fortunate to win.
Another increasingly popular product for a more contemporary deck is Millboard decking, available in a variety of colours. It is a composite decking and a little more expensive but provides a great alternative to the traditional wooden look. Having used it on a couple of decking projects it certainly provides a stunning finish.
But if it is just simple shelving, making or supplying and fitting of new doors or gates, or repairs to old kitchen floors - I am very happy to chat through any project and provide an estimate for the work.
